Life in The Blood
Deoxyribonucleic acid, commonly known as DNA, contains the genetic blue print for almost every living
organism. In humans, we obtain our own unique DNA from our parents – half from our mothers and half from our fathers (hence the phrase you reproduce what you are). Every cell in your body contains DNA except for one: red blood cells.
Red blood cells begin with DNA, but as they mature, the nucleus, which contains the DNA, is kicked out of the cell. This may somehow assist the cell to focus solely on import and export of oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout your body. However, red blood cells can exist for months without the DNA.
I mention this to pose an interesting analogy. God’s Word tells us that life is in the blood. And biochemically speaking, this is right on! But consider this; when Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, death was released into them. Ever since then, death/aging has been passed on through their progeny for millennia. And actually, “aging” genes have been discovered in human DNA. So in one sense, death has been passed to us from our grrrrrrrrrrrrreat grandparents, Adam and Eve, not just spiritually, but also through their DNA.
Now let’s look at the blood. Mature blood contains no DNA and is the only cell in the body responsible for carrying life giving oxygen to all of our body. I suggest that God designed us this way so that “death” would literally not be in the blood! When we come to know Christ as our Savior and Lord, it’s like He kicks out Adam’s DNA to replace it with simply Him: Life. So praise God for our DNA, because without it you would not exist. But also praise God for His life giving blood, which flows through every believer!
